Nest Hello Wedge: What Is it?

The nest hello comes with the nest hello wedge in the box that allows you to adjust the viewing angle to the left or right by 15 degrees. When you are mounting your nest hello you should decide if you want the to install the nest hello wedge before you install the nest hello as the wires for the nest hello must be routed through the wedge attached to the back of the mounting plate.

The nest hello wedge has two “adhesive” stickers on it where the screw holes are located, the sticker covers should be removed and the nest hello wedge firmly pressed against the back of the nest hello mounting plate for 20 seconds to make sure the adhesive properly sticks to the nest hello mount. We cover tips for installing the nest hello below in our related post. You can see the 15 degree nest hello wedge included with the nest hello in the photo below

Nest Hello 3rd Party Angle Mount: 35 Degree Angle Mount Change

If you need to change the nest hello angle more than 15 degrees there are 3rd party options available on amazon that will allow you to change the nest hello angle mount up to 35 degrees which is 20 degrees more than the nest hello wedge. While 35 degrees might not seem like a lot it can make a big difference on what you see with within the viewing angle of the nest hello. The nest hello has a 160 degree viewing angle so it covers a large field of view but using either the included nest wedge or a nest hello angle mount can help improve what you want to see at your front door.

Below we have provided several diagrams that illustrate what you will see with the nest hello in different viewing configurations with different angles using both the nest wedge or compatible 35 degree nest hello angle mounts.

Standard forward facing nest hello installation, no wedge or nest hello angle mount used.

Forward Facing Nest Hello: Nest Hello Viewing Angle

The diagrams below show you the view you will get using your nest hello with no wedge, the view with the nest hello wedge 15 degree adjustment, and the view with a nest hello angle mount so you can determine the best viewing angle for your nest hello.

In the diagrams the field of view of the nest hello is represented by everything between the two red lines. The blue line represents the front of the house and the nest hello position is represented to the right of the door.

Without the nest hello wedge you can cover 160 degrees, but there could be a potential blind spot close to your front door. As you can see in the second diagram adding the nest hello wedge with it’s 15 degrees of tilt will most likely eliminate blind spots close to the door if your doorbell is positioned on the doorframe itself or close to the door.

If the nest hello is positioned further away from the door, the potential for blind spots will increase and using a the nest hello wedge or a nest hello angle mount can help reduce the blind spots near the door.

In the third diagram we show the nest hello viewing angle when the 35 degree nest hello angle mount is used. If your doorbell is mounted on the doorframe the 35 degree nest hello angle mount is most likely excessive. If your nest nello is mounted further away from the door the 35 degree nest hello angle mount could help eliminate blind spots near the door. The other potential reason to use the 35 degree nest hello angle mount in this scenario would be if you wanted to cover more area in a driveway, or a particular side of your house.

For most people if the doorbell is mounted on the existing door frame is facing forward in the direction you want to cover, there is most likely no need for the nest hello wedge or the nest hello angle mount. but if you are looking to cover a specific part of your front yard or the doorbell is located further away from your front door the nest hello angle mount with 35 degrees of adjustment can help you get a better view.

Side Facing Nest Hello: Get The Best View

Every house is different and optimizing the viewing angle for your particular house might take a little bit of adjustment. Once you have the nest hello installed, you can always go back and change the viewing angle it’s just a little bit more work. That’s why we’ve compiled the diagrams here to show you the viewing angle you get with different home configurations without the nest hello wedge and with the nest hello angle mount.

On a nest hello installation where your nest hello is mounted to a wall adjacent to your door like in the diagrams below you will get a great view of visitors and package delivery people who come to ring the doorbell. This is because it’s natural to turn and press the doorbell and look at it when you go to press it meaning you will get a good shot of peoples faces who do press your doorbell.

But if your looking to protect your home from would be amazon package thieves and you have a side facing doorbell as shown in the diagram below it’s useful to consider the following. A package thief isn’t going to ring your doorbell and orient their face looking directly at your door, their primary goal is to get the package and get in and out as quick as possible they are looking at the package on your front doorbell not your doorbell. Often times amazon package thieves try and obstruct their faces as much as possible with either hats or hoods.

If the nest hello is mounted to the side of your door as in the diagram below you can risk only getting a profile shot of the package thief, which might not be as helpful to authorities as getting a full frontal face shot. In the diagrams below we illustrate the potential issue and view that you would see though your nest hello. The green side shows you what will be on camera and the red side shows what will most likely be obstructed from view.

If you have a side mounted doorbell you can add the 35 degree nest hello angle mount to increase the probability that you will catch a good face shot of a package thief approaching the door as shown below.

The first diagram shows the view with no wedge or angle adjustment. The second diagram shows the view with the 35 degree nest hello angle mount.

Nest Hello Installed with Nest Hello Angle Mount With 35 degrees of Tilt

There are several options online for nest hello adjustable angle mounts but we prefer the Koroao nest hello angle mount shown below because it offers the most versatility for adjustment, good quality and a fair price. There are other nest hello mounts that provide just a larger plate behind the nest hello for covering the old holes from your doorbell but don’t allow for angle adjustment. The mount below allows you do use just the plate with no angle adjustment, use the plate with the provided nest wedge for 15 degree adjustment, or use the plate with 35 degree nest hello angle mount for maximum viewing angle adjustment. You can also use the 35 degree nest hello angle mount by itself without the back palate if the nest hello is in a tight corner and there is no room for the back plate. As far as the other options we’ve seen we haven’t seen one that allows for this variety of mounting options to get the best view for your front door.

Nest Hello Installed In A Corner

Below we show you an example of a nest hello installed in a corner and the typical view you will get with a nest hello installed in a corner using the 15 degree provided nest hello wedge.

You can see with the provided nest hello 15 degree wedge you get a good view of the approach to the door and a portion of the side yard. This viewing angle covers the entire front of the door and you can actually see the left side of the doorframe in the lower left of the nest hello live video feed.

The only downside to current view using the nest hello with the nest hello wedge is that a portion of the feed is viewing the wall. If you wanted to maximise the view for better coverage of the side yard you could use a 35 degree nest hello angle mount.

How To Adjust The Nest Hello View Up Or Down

We commonly get asked if you can change the up-down vertical viewing angle of the nest hello, and the short answer is that there are not stock mounts that allow you do change the the view up or down, all the adjustment is for adjusting either left or right. However you can change the viewing angle on your own with a just a few small washers 1/4” hole 5/8” diameter washers like these. The 5/8” diameter washers will still fit behind the nest hello without extending past the mount plate. With up down adjustment of the nest hello you don’t need many washers to adjust the viewing angle typically just one or two washers is needed. If you add too many washers it can start to affect the look of how the nest hello is mounted.

One trick we have used is piling the washers behind the nest hello cover plastic cover plate at the top screw hole with no washers at the bottom screw hole. Because of the flexibility of the plastic you can add some tilt to the nest hello while completely concealing the washers. If you wanted to adjust the viewing angle of the nest hello upwards you could do so by adding washers to the bottom screw instead of the top screw.

We have found most people want to adjust the viewing angle downwards to view a steps that go down from a landing or a porch to street level to better cover people approaching towards an elevated house.
