How To Reset Echo Dot

We teach you how to reset Echo Dot. We've included both video instructions and step by step instructions for you to follow along resetting your Echo Dot.

The instructions below are for the 3rd generation and later Echo Dot which is the most current version of the Echo Dot. If you have a generation 2 or generation 2 echo dot you will need to follow the instructions in this video: Reset Gen 2 Echo Dot

Why Reset Alexa Dot?

If you're giving away your Echo Dot, changing your account or your wifi network you might need to reset your echo dot. Or if for some reason your are getting rid of your echo dot you will want to make sure you factory reset the device and get rid of all personal information before it leaves your house.

How To Reset Echo Dot Step by Step

  1. Prep

    Make sure your Amazon Echo Dot its on.

  2. Hold Down Action Button For 20-30 Seconds

    Hold down the action button on the Echo Dot for 20-40 seconds. The action button is solid black "Dot" on the top face of the Echo Dot. You will keep holding the Echo Dot will then show a lighted rotating a yellow/orange ring around the outside. Keep holding the action button during this time but it means that the Echo Dot is starting the reset process.

  3. Reset Function

    Keep holding the Echo Action button after the yellow/orange ring starts rotating. It will then stop rotating and start flashing. When the lighted Yellow ring stops flashing you can release your finger from the Echo Dot button.

  4. Settings Reset

    Once the lighted yellow/orange ring has stopped flashing it means that the Echo Dot has been factory reset. The Echo Dot will then go through the normal set up process just like it came out of the box. The lights will then automatically turn on off and the device is starting back up like it was just plugged in

  5. Setup or Unplug

    The Echo Dot will then start it's process of starting back up and the blue light ring will turn on after about 60 seconds and the Echo Dot will say "Your Alexa Device is Ready for setup" and then after 20-60 more seconds the light ring will flash orange and you can use the Alexa app to setup you Echo Dot.
